The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, has dismissed recent claims made by the House of Representatives suggesting that terrorists operating within Nigeria possess weapons superior to those used by the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Abubakar firmly refuted the assertion, describing it as misleading and potentially damaging to the morale of troops on the frontlines.
The House had earlier expressed concern that terrorists were better equipped, citing recent attacks and security breaches across the country.
In his response, the Minister insisted that the Nigerian military remains well-equipped and capable of countering all forms of security threats.
He acknowledged the persistent challenges facing the Armed Forces, particularly in areas like the North-East and North-West, but maintained that the military’s arsenal is sufficient to neutralize criminal elements.
“Our Armed Forces are not only properly armed but are continually being upgraded to match emerging threats. The notion that terrorists have superior firepower is incorrect and does not reflect the reality on ground,” he said.
Abubakar also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government to boost military capacity through partnerships, local production of arms, and improved welfare for personnel.
He urged citizens to continue supporting the military through credible intelligence sharing and public cooperation.
The minister reassured Nigerians of the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability across all regions affected by insecurity.
