Shock in Anambra as Two Suspects in Justice Azuka’s Murder Escape From Police Custody

Residents of Anambra State have been left in shock after two key suspects linked to the murder of lawmaker Justice Azuka escaped from police custody.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday night.

According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects fled while assisting officers in an ongoing investigation to apprehend a receiver of stolen vehicles used by the criminal gang.

While the receiver was successfully arrested and two stolen vehicles recovered, the suspects managed to escape, raising concerns over security lapses.

Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, was abducted on December 24, 2024. His decomposing body was discovered on February 6, 2025, under the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha.

Following his murder, nine suspects were initially arrested in connection with the crime.

In response to the escape, Anambra Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has deployed intelligence and tactical teams to track down the fugitives.

He has also ordered disciplinary action against the officers responsible for their custody.

The escape has sparked public outrage, with many questioning the security measures in place to prevent such incidents.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to recapture the suspects and ensure justice is served.
