U.S. President Donald J. Trump has announced that India and Pakistan have reached a ceasefire agreement following a week-long escalation in hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The announcement was made on Saturday via Trump’s official Truth Social handle, where he stated that both countries had agreed to halt further military action after he entervened in tense diplomatic negotiations.
According to Trump, the ceasefire was reached following “a long night of talks” reportedly mediated by the United States.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” Trump posted.
“Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”
Tensions had flared up earlier in the week when India launched an airstrike on a location believed to be a base operated by Pakistan-based terrorists.
The attack drew a sharp response from Pakistan, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
While official statements from both India and Pakistan have yet to confirm the ceasefire publicly, Trump’s remarks have raised hopes of a diplomatic resolution to the latest standoff between the two countries.
International observers have welcomed the announcement as a step toward restoring peace and stability in the region.
