At least 10 worshippers, including the Imam, were kidnapped when gunmen stormed a mosque in Sabon Birni, Sokoto State, during early morning Subhi prayers on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses told News men that the attackers, suspected to be bandits, invaded the mosque while prayers were in progress, causing panic among the worshippers. Residents say the community has suffered repeated attacks despite the presence of security forces.
However, swift intervention by Nigerian Army troops helped to prevent further escalation. Security agents engaged the gunmen, limiting the extent of the attack.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday, with its spokesman, Ahmed Rufai, stating that police were working alongside other security agencies to rescue the abducted victims. Efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safe return of those taken.
A Sokoto State House of Assembly member, representing Sabon Birni B Constituency, also confirmed the attack.
Residents continue to call for stronger security measures to curb the persistent threat of armed attacks in the region.
