Each Nigerian Owes ₦700K as National Debt Hits ₦142 Trillion

Nigeria’s total public debt climbed to ₦142.3 trillion by September 30, 2024, a 5.97% increase (₦8.02 trillion) from ₦134.3 trillion in June, according to the Debt Management Office (DMO).

External debt stands at ₦68.89 trillion, while domestic borrowings reached ₦73.4 trillion. In dollar terms, total debt rose slightly by 0.29%, from $42.90 billion in June to $43.03 billion in September. However, the naira valuation of external debt surged 9.22%, reflecting currency depreciation.

Domestic debt rose by 3.10%, with federal government liabilities climbing to ₦69.22 trillion, while state and FCT debt fell marginally to ₦4.21 trillion.
