tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in Vwei community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where 18 cows reportedly died after grazing on a recently fumigated farmland.
According to local sources, the cattle, owned by a herder identified as Dan’azumi Haruna, strayed into the farmland around midday, unaware that the area had been treated with chemicals earlier.
The chemicals, believed to have been used to control pests and weeds, proved fatal to the animals.
Out of the 18 cattle affected, 11 died on the spot due to the toxic exposure, while another seven were reportedly slaughtered by the owner due to fears of contamination and potential harm to consumers if the meat were to be consumed without proper safety precautions.
Local eyewitnesses also confirmed that an additional 15 cows showed symptoms of poisoning and are currently receiving treatment from local veterinary services.
Residents expressed concern over the recurring clashes between agricultural and pastoral activities, highlighting the need for better communication and preventive measures to avoid such losses in the future.
Authorities in Riyom LGA have yet to release an official statement, but investigations into the incident are expected to commence.
