Senegal has achieved a major milestone by refining its own oil for the first time at the African Refinery Company (SAR) near Dakar.
Until now, SAR had only processed imported crude, but the company has successfully refined oil from the Sangomar offshore field, marking a new era in the country’s energy sector.
This development comes as Senegal solidifies its position as Africa’s newest oil producer, following the commencement of oil production at Sangomar in June 2024.
The ability to refine domestically produced crude represents a significant step toward energy independence, reducing reliance on imported oil and enhancing economic growth.
Officials say this breakthrough will help strengthen Senegal’s refining capacity, lower fuel import costs, and potentially stabilize local fuel prices.
