Police operatives in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State have arrested a suspected vandal identified as Umoru Faruk Unusah, known for repeated attacks on public infrastructure in the area.
According to local authorities, Unusah was apprehended while attempting to steal cable wires from a government-installed solar-powered street light.
The arrest followed a series of complaints from residents about frequent vandalism of public utilities, which has left several communities in darkness and disrupted essential services.
The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the arrest in a statement, noting that the suspect had been on their watchlist due to multiple reports linking him to previous incidents of infrastructure theft.
Items recovered from him at the scene included cut cables and tools allegedly used for the operation.
Police spokesperson assured that Unusah will be charged to court after the completion of investigations, adding that the crackdown on vandals is part of a wider effort to protect government property and deter similar crimes across the state.
Residents of Idah have applauded the police for the swift action, calling for stricter measures to curb vandalism, which they say hampers development and wastes taxpayers’ money.
