The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested four individuals for engaging in illegal waste disposal at an unauthorized dumpsite in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
According to a statement from the agency, the suspects identified as Umoyo Ezekiah (63), Rasheed Soyiga (59), Muhammed Aruna (27), and Ajala Dasola (53) were apprehended by the LAWMA Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team during a late-night operation on October 29, 2025.
The team reportedly caught the offenders dumping waste indiscriminately in violation of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law, which prohibits residents and cart pushers from disposing refuse outside designated areas.
LAWMA noted that such actions contribute to environmental degradation, blocked drainage systems, and flooding across the city.
The agency emphasized that the arrests form part of its ongoing clampdown on environmental offenders and efforts to promote cleaner, healthier communities. The suspects are expected to face prosecution in line with existing waste management laws.
Speaking on the incident, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal dumping. He urged residents and business owners to patronize only PSP (Private Sector Participant) operators approved by LAWMA for waste collection and disposal.
“We are committed to maintaining a cleaner Lagos, and we will continue to enforce environmental regulations across the state. Anyone caught violating these laws will face the full consequences,” Dr. Gbadegesin stated.
He further encouraged residents to report cases of indiscriminate dumping through LAWMA’s toll-free numbers and social media platforms, assuring that surveillance operations would continue, particularly in areas prone to illegal waste disposal.
