The Federal Government has kick-started a comprehensive port modernisation programme aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s seaports, starting with the Apapa and Tincan Island ports in Lagos.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Wednesday during the 3rd Maritime Transportation Industry Breakfast Meeting, organised by the Nigerian Maritime Law Association.
Speaking at the event, which held in Lagos under the theme “Prospects for Accelerated Growth and Other Matters Arising”, Oyetola explained that the programme is being carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) as part of efforts to reposition the maritime sector for global competitiveness.
The Minister, who was represented by the Director of Maritime Services, Dr. Mercy Ilori, said the modernisation initiative would involve the reconstruction of existing and aging port infrastructure, particularly at Apapa and Tincan Island, to improve vessel handling and cargo turnaround time.
He stated that modern, well-equipped ports are vital to improving trade efficiency, increasing revenue, and attracting foreign investment in the blue economy sector.
According to him, the Federal Government is committed to transforming the sector through strategic policies, infrastructure upgrades, and stakeholder collaboration.
The move is expected to significantly enhance the nation’s port operations and maritime logistics chain.
