A Nigerian soldier has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of a businessman, Mr. Enobong Jimmy, whom he killed after being offered a lift from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State.
The soldier, identified as Private Stephen, attached to the 6 Battalion, Akwa Ibom, was found guilty of murder and armed robbery following a military court-martial. According to the prosecution, the tragic incident occurred after Mr. Jimmy, acting out of kindness, offered the soldier a free ride.
Midway through the journey, in a deserted area, the soldier attacked the unsuspecting businessman. He reportedly stabbed and shot the victim multiple times before dumping his body by the roadside and fleeing with his vehicle.
Investigators later traced the stolen car to Benue State, where the soldier was arrested while driving it. During interrogation, he confessed that his intention from the onset was to seize the vehicle.
Military authorities condemned the act as a grave violation of the code of conduct, emphasizing that such behavior tarnishes the image of the Nigerian Army. A panel of senior officers subsequently convicted him after reviewing evidence presented during the trial.
Delivering the judgment, the court described the crime as “cold-blooded and premeditated,” ruling that the soldier be executed by hanging.
The verdict has sparked public outrage and sorrow, with many describing the incident as a betrayal of public trust. Mr. Jimmy, remembered as a generous and peace-loving businessman, was said to have offered rides to travelers frequently.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to discipline and justice, assuring that rogue officers who engage in criminal acts will face the full weight of the law.
