Authorities in Florida have arrested 61-year-old Craig Vogt on charges of felony aggravated animal cruelty after he allegedly killed, cooked, and ate two of his own pet peacocks during a dispute with a neighbor.
The arrest, made on September 23, 2025, followed an investigation sparked by a handwritten letter Vogt reportedly left in his neighbor’s mailbox. According to the arrest affidavit, Vogt admitted in the letter that he killed the birds “to prove a point” after his neighbor continued feeding them against his wishes.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that the felony charge does not stem from the act of consuming the animals but from the cruelty and malicious intent alleged in the case.
Prosecutors argue that Vogt deliberately carried out the killings in a manner designed to cause distress, escalating the offense beyond a domestic property dispute.
Animal rights advocates have condemned the act, describing it as a disturbing example of cruelty fueled by personal conflict. “This case underscores how disputes can spiral into needless acts of violence against defenseless animals,” one advocate said.
Neighbors expressed shock at the incident, noting that the peacocks had been a familiar presence in the area. “We knew he was upset about the birds wandering, but no one expected it to end like this,” a local resident told reporters.
Vogt was taken into custody and booked into the county jail, where he awaits his first court appearance. If convicted, he could face significant prison time and fines under Florida’s animal cruelty laws.
