The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has introduced significant changes to the church’s long-standing marriage guidelines, easing restrictions that previously limited interaction between intending couples.
Speaking at the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference, Kumuyi explained that some of the church’s traditional policies, such as the six month courtship rule, were not biblical commandments but administrative measures aimed at helping young people avoid sin.
Responding to a question from a female participant, who expressed concern that single ladies often struggled to truly know prospective husbands because they were not allowed to visit them, Kumuyi acknowledged the need for flexibility.
He stressed that marriage is a lifelong commitment that could shape one’s destiny, making it important for couples to gain deeper insights into each other’s lives.
“You’re marrying the man, but he comes with his family, relatives, and environment. Visiting his home allows you to see how they relate to you and how he responds in his natural setting,” Kumuyi said.
He added that some men might conceal aspects of their character by keeping conversations neutral, while visits could reveal more genuine realities. “Why not? If not, follow them home,” he emphasized.
The cleric, however, urged members to exercise maturity and responsibility, cautioning against abusing the new allowance.
He expressed confidence that young people in the church would not misuse the opportunity by visiting at odd hours or engaging in inappropriate behavior.
The announcement has sparked conversations among Deeper Life members and the wider Christian community, with many describing it as a historic shift from the church’s conservative stance on relationships.
