Geh Geh University saga, A coalition of academics, students, alumni, and concerned citizens has petitioned the National Universities Commission (NUC) to take urgent action against social media comedians and influencers who label their platforms as “universities.”
In a protest letter sent to the NUC Executive Secretary, the group condemned the rise of parody institutions such as “Geh Geh University” and “Blessing CEO University.”
They argued that the misuse of the term “university” undermines the credibility of Nigeria’s higher education sector and could potentially mislead the public.
Dr. Charles Ekeh, spokesperson for the Coalition for the Protection of Academic Integrity in Nigeria, emphasized that the word “university” is a legally protected designation reserved for accredited institutions that meet rigorous standards.
Allowing comedians to adopt the term, he said, trivializes the hard-earned respect of recognized universities and weakens regulatory authority.
The coalition cited provisions of the NUC Act, which prohibit the unauthorized use of the word “university.”
They warned that failure to enforce these laws would embolden parody creators and increase the risk of unsuspecting individuals falling victim to scams disguised as informal institutions.
Dr. Ekeh also expressed concern that equating accredited universities with comedic platforms could tarnish the international reputation of Nigerian higher institutions and provide cover for fraudulent degree mills.
The group demanded that the NUC issue cease-and-desist orders, release a public condemnation, and collaborate with the National Communication Commission (NCC) and social media companies to enforce compliance.
They further recommended public awareness campaigns to help Nigerians identify accredited universities.
“This is not about stifling creativity,” Dr. Ekeh clarified. “It is about protecting the sanctity of Nigeria’s education system. Defending the integrity of our universities is no laughing matter.”
