In a move aimed at fostering peace and order, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, on Saturday ordered the dissolution of the Sharia panel established at the Central Mosque in Ado Ekiti.
This decision followed concerns raised over the panel’s operation and its potential impact on the community’s harmony.
Speaking at a meeting with community chiefs, indigenes, and Muslim leaders, including Sheik Jamiu Kewulere, President of the League of Imams and Alfas in the Southwest, Edo, and Delta states, Oba Adejugbe emphasized the importance of maintaining the long-standing peaceful coexistence in the community.
The meeting came shortly after the Ekiti State Government clarified that the state’s legal framework does not recognize Sharia Courts or Arbitration Panels.
State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata (SAN), had earlier highlighted that matters concerning marriage and inheritance have traditionally been resolved through the state’s existing legal structures, which include Customary and High Courts.
Oba Adejugbe stated, “I summoned the Chief Imam and other leaders to discuss the sensitive matter. They explained that the committee was set up to address disputes internally, but I advised them to revert to the practices of the founding fathers of the mosque.” He added, “The panel stands dissolved. Allowing such committees could lead to demands from other religious groups, potentially resulting in unrest.”
Chief Imam Kewulere, while confirming the dissolution, clarified that the panel was established to address inheritance matters within the Muslim community and dismissed allegations of external influence. He reiterated that Muslims in the area enjoy cordial relationships with other religious groups.
This decisive step by the Ewi of Ado Ekiti underscores the importance of unity and adherence to established legal frameworks in preserving community harmony.
