The Delta State Police Command has taken swift disciplinary action following the circulation of a viral video showing some of its officers assaulting a young man. The disturbing footage, which sparked public outrage online, shows uniformed officers physically assaulting the unidentified civilian in an undisclosed location within the state.
In response to the incident, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, announced on Sunday that the officers involved have been identified, arrested, and detained on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.
In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Edafe condemned the officers’ actions, emphasizing that the era of unchecked police brutality and incivility is over.
“We won’t tolerate incivility. Gone are those days when brutality and misconduct go unchecked. Those who assaulted the victim will be used as an example, as directed by the CP,” he stated.
Edafe further disclosed that in addition to the arrest of the involved officers, their team leaders—who are senior officers—have been issued formal queries. He confirmed that an orderly room trial will commence on Monday to investigate the case and determine appropriate disciplinary measures.
“The evidence in the video is clear, but the victim’s statement will also be crucial in ensuring justice is served,” he added.
This development comes amid growing calls for accountability and reform within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
