Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Monday, visited the burnt electronics market at Iweka Road and the warehouse at Ifejirika Street in Onitsha, where a devastating fire incident left traders counting massive losses.
Obi described the visit as heartbreaking, noting that the level of destruction was overwhelming. He estimated that billions of naira worth of goods and properties were lost in the inferno, further worsening the economic struggles of affected traders.
During his visit, Obi held private meetings with market leaders and some of the most severely affected traders.
He also commended the State Fire Service for their efforts in containing the fire despite facing significant challenges.
Appealing for urgent support, Obi called on the local, state, and federal governments, as well as corporate organizations and private individuals, to extend assistance to the victims.
“In moments like this, our shared humanity must prevail,” Obi stated. “We must come together to restore hope, rebuild livelihoods, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines us.”
The former governor also pledged to provide personal support to the affected traders, emphasizing the need for collective action in times of crisis.
