The Nigerian Army has expressed serious concern over the low turnout of applicants from the South East region in its ongoing 2025 recruitment exercise, highlighting a significant disparity compared to other parts of the country.
According to figures released by Army authorities, while Kaduna State alone has already recorded over 3,000 applications, Enugu State is lagging behind with just about 100 applicants, raising alarm within military circles.
The development has prompted discussions around regional participation in national defense duties, as well as the need to foster trust and awareness among communities in the South East regarding career opportunities within the armed forces.
Military officials have urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and state governments in the region to mobilize and encourage able-bodied youths to take advantage of the ongoing recruitment window, which offers employment, training, and a path to serving the nation.
“The Nigerian Army remains an inclusive institution, open to all qualified Nigerians regardless of region, religion, or background. We want to see a balanced representation from every part of the country,” a military source stated.
The Army emphasized that recruitment is strictly merit-based and transparent, urging interested youths to visit designated registration centers or apply online through the official recruitment portal before the deadline.
The disparity has sparked fresh debate over the South East’s relationship with federal institutions and the need for renewed confidence-building measures between the region and national security agencies.
