The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has issued a stern warning to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government, cautioning them against disregarding resolutions passed by the National Assembly.
Speaking during a plenary session at the Senate chamber on Monday, Akpabio stressed that the National Assembly remains a critical arm of government whose resolutions must be treated with utmost respect and urgency.
He noted that persistent noncompliance by some MDAs undermines the authority of the legislature and disrupts efforts toward national development and accountability.
“Resolutions of the National Assembly are not mere suggestions; they represent the collective voice and will of the Nigerian people,” Akpabio stated. “Government agencies must understand that ignoring these resolutions is not only unacceptable but also a breach of constitutional responsibility.”
The Senate President emphasized that the legislature has constitutional oversight powers over all government agencies and will not hesitate to invoke sanctions against any MDA found to be in defiance of its directives.
He also urged committee chairpersons and members of the Senate to remain vigilant in monitoring compliance and ensure all relevant agencies are held accountable.
Akpabio’s comments come amid growing concerns over increasing reports of some MDAs flouting legislative invitations, failing to submit requested documents, and disregarding recommendations made during oversight engagements.
The Senate is expected to follow up with a formal resolution mandating strict enforcement of compliance across the board.
