The College of Cardinals has officially begun the sacred process of electing a new pope, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025.
On Wednesday, the 133 cardinal electors gathered in Vatican City to take their solemn oath of secrecy, marking a critical step in the lead-up to the papal conclave.
As tradition dictates, the cardinals also participated in a spiritual meditation, delivered by the former Preacher of the Papal Household, to guide their hearts and minds ahead of the momentous decision.
Pope Francis, the 266th Vicar of Christ, was elected in 2013 and led the Catholic Church for over a decade, steering it through significant global and spiritual challenges.
Speculation has already begun over possible successors, with names such as Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, and Cardinal Peter Erdo of Hungary emerging as potential frontrunners.
However, the conclave remains a highly secretive and unpredictable process, guided by prayer, reflection, and centuries-old tradition.
Once the cardinals reach a decision, the traditional signal of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel will announce to the world that a new pope has been chosen.
