Atiku, Obi, and El-Rufai Teams Up to Challenge Tinubu in 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai have launched a political movement aimed at ending President Bola Tinubu’s rule in 2027.

Atiku confirmed this initiative during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, where a coalition of political leaders and stakeholders from across Nigeria gathered to discuss the state of the nation.

When asked whether the meeting signified the beginning of a coalition to unseat Tinubu in 2027, Atiku responded, “Yes.”

During the press conference, Atiku and his allies also criticized President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.

Atiku stated:

“We have come together to address the dangerous and unconstitutional actions taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025—the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State and the illegal suspension of the democratically elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and State House of Assembly.”

He described the move as an autocratic attempt to impose federal control over a legitimately elected state government, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for democracy in Nigeria.

The coalition urged Nigerians, particularly members of the National Assembly, to reject Tinubu’s actions and uphold the country’s constitutional democracy.

“We strongly condemn this development and call on all Nigerians of good conscience to resist this brazen assault on the constitution and democratic institutions,” Atiku declared.

He further argued that Tinubu’s state of emergency was politically motivated, stemming from the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, which was recently ruled on by the Supreme Court.

With political tensions rising, this coalition could mark the beginning of a major opposition movement against Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
