Telecom operators in Nigeria are set to reduce the recent 50% tariff hike on data and call rates, following an agreement with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The decision comes after widespread complaints from subscribers who have been struggling with the high cost of airtime and data bundles.
Many Nigerians took to social media to express frustration over the increased charges, which they claim have made communication unaffordable.
Initially, telecom companies raised prices by 50%, citing rising operational costs, inflation, and the naira’s depreciation. However, after negotiations, the Federal Government directed operators to lower the increase to 35% instead.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed the development, stating that discussions with telecom providers were ongoing to ensure compliance with the revised tariff structure.
While no official date has been announced for the adjustment, industry experts expect telecom operators to implement the 35% hike in the coming days, replacing the 50% increase that has been in effect.
This move is expected to bring some relief to millions of Nigerians who rely heavily on mobile communication and internet services for daily activities, business, and education.
