Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed the Israeli Army to take action in defense of the Druze community in Jaramana, a town located just 3 km southeast of Damascus, Syria.
The Druze-majority town has come under heavy attack by Syrian government forces following violent clashes that erupted yesterday. Reports indicate that Syrian troops and allied militias have intensified assaults on the area, sparking fears of mass casualties and displacement.
Netanyahu, alongside Defense Minister Israel Katz, has issued a strong warning, stating that any harm to the Druze people would trigger Israeli retaliation. He reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to protecting the Druze population, vowing that Israel will take all necessary measures to ensure their safety.
“We will not stand by while the Druze community faces aggression. Any attack on them will be met with a firm response,” Netanyahu reportedly said.
The Druze, an ethnoreligious minority in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, have historically maintained close ties with Israel, particularly the Druze community in the Golan Heights. Given their strategic and cultural significance, Israel’s intervention could escalate regional tensions and bring it into direct confrontation with Syrian forces.
As the situation in Jaramana remains volatile, international observers are closely monitoring whether Israel will take military action against Syrian government forces to safeguard the Druze population.
