The United States is set to deport 201 Nigerians, with deportees scheduled to be flown into Lagos, according to U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr.
Mills Jr. confirmed that the first group of deportees would include convicted prisoners and individuals who have violated U.S. immigration laws.
Many of them had appealed deportation orders but were denied and are now set for repatriation.
“Those to be repatriated will be dropped in Lagos. There won’t be an option for Port Harcourt or Abuja,” Mills stated.
He emphasized that the new U.S. administration is focused on ensuring a structured and dignified return for deportees. However, concerns have been raised over how these individuals will reintegrate into Nigerian society.
Reports indicate that 85 Nigerians have already been cleared for deportation, while others remain in U.S. immigration detention centers awaiting processing.
The situation has sparked anxiety, especially among families in Nigeria who rely on their relatives abroad for financial support.
“Many of these deportees have dependents back home. The sudden loss of their financial contributions will be devastating, especially for children whose education is funded by them,” a concerned official stated.
Nigerian authorities have urged the U.S. to allow deportees ample time to sort out their assets before repatriation, arguing that a rushed deportation process could be traumatic, particularly for those who have not committed violent crimes.
As discussions continue between both governments, the Nigerian public awaits further clarity on the fate of those affected.
