On Friday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum unveiled a new initiative aimed at reducing the number of firearms on the country’s violence-plagued streets.
The program, titled “Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace,” encourages citizens to anonymously surrender their weapons at designated drop-off sites, including churches, in exchange for cash.
Participants will receive 8,700 pesos ($430) for a revolver, 25,000 pesos ($1,200) for an AK-47, and 26,450 pesos ($1,300) for a machine gun. Once collected, the firearms will be destroyed as part of the effort to promote peace and safety.
